Dear Parishioners:
Last week, we installed the newest leadership in our local Knights of Columbus Council: Mary, Mother of God Council (pictured below).
The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic lay fraternal service organization. Founded in 1882 by Blessed Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut, it was created to provide mutual financial aid and insurance for working-class and immigrant Catholic families, and to unite Catholic men in their faith. Their Core Principles and Mission are:
- Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Patriotism: These four core principles guide the daily work and values of the order.
- Charitable Work: Members raise funds and volunteer for local, national, and international humanitarian relief, disaster aid, coats for kids, and pro-life initiatives.
- Insurance Provider: The organization operates a large life insurance program to protect members and their families
Locally, the Knights of Columbus Councils on Long Island have hosted events to help the Senior priests at the St. Pius X Residence and they have supported seminarians as well. Even more locally, our local Council has helped out our Parish immensely. They helped move furniture in the classrooms, greatly accelerating the school clean-up after the Summer Camp. They host the monthly Pancake Breakfast; they host the annual Summer Beach Mass and picnic/cook-out. They greatly assisted at the Parish Family Festival last year as well. They also repaired all the kneelers in the pews in the Church over this past summer, which was quite an undertaking!
I encourage all men over 18 years old to join our Knights of Columbus. Join a fraternal organization that serves the local community. Call Fr. Brian for more details on how to join.
Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God.
In Christ,
Msgr. Brian McNamara
Fr. Brian
PS: I also urge you to contact Gov. Hochul’s office concerning the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program. There is a full page about this issue in the bulletin, but I wanted to highlight the importance this issue. The Federal government instituted this tax credit program BUT individual states have to opt in. Please encourage her to opt-in; this is an election year. We need to have our voices heard!
